Early selection for drought tolerance in popcorn based on gene effects estimated in seedlings

Low rainfall rates are becoming increasingly frequent because of climate change, causing droughts and threatening world food security. For popcorn, drought is the most limiting abiotic factor for plant’s growth development. Thus, water deficit directly impacts crop productivity. Based on knowledge genetic basis traits involved in stages popcorn germination seedling development under stress, genotypes with potential adaptation to adverse growing conditions can be selected early. Therefore, data effects combining ability 10 parents were compiled propose breeding strategies cultivars greater stress early stages.
